Help make your Chromebook better by being a power beta tester

Chromebook's lightweight ChromeOS is appealing for its automatic backups and robust security updates. However, you can enhance your experience by participating in the ChromeOS beta program. This provides early access to new features and allows you to contribute to software improvement by reporting bugs.

Google recently launched the Beta Tester Hub, simplifying direct interaction with developers and providing updates. Remember, beta testing involves risk; bugs might affect applications or local files. Regular backups are crucial.

Joining the Beta Program:

Unlike other beta programs, ChromeOS doesn't require registration. Simply adjust your settings:

  1. Access Chromebook settings (click the time in the lower-right corner, then the cog icon).

  2. Under "About Chrome OS," select "Additional details."

  3. You'll see your current software channel (Stable, Beta, or Dev). The Stable channel is recommended for stability. To join the beta program, switch to the "Beta" or "Dev" channel. Beta offers new features approximately a month before the stable release with minimal risks. Dev provides weekly updates but may have more bugs.

  4. Select "Change channel," choose your preferred channel (Beta or Dev), and confirm. Restarting is required. Switching to a more stable channel will necessitate a reset (like a fresh installation), so back up your data beforehand.

Reporting Bugs and Providing Feedback:

Once in the Beta or Dev channel, you're a ChromeOS tester. Google automatically collects anonymized crash data. To report issues manually, press Alt Shift I (with the problem visible) to access the feedback form. Provide detailed descriptions, attach relevant files or screenshots, and optionally allow Google to contact you for further information.

For more direct involvement, visit the ChromeOS Beta Tester Hub. This website offers information on new features, allows direct bug reporting, and provides an opportunity to become a Product Expert (requiring more extensive feedback and forum participation).
