Google is making it easier to scrub your personal info from search results
Google expands its policy on removing personal information from search results. Previously, Google only removed links containing information directly usable for identity theft (like Social Security numbers). Now, they'll consider removing links displaying personal contact information such as phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, images of ID documents, and confidential login credentials.
This expansion reflects Google's commitment to user control over sensitive personal data. While Google doesn't host this data, its search engine often surfaces it from other websites, placing it in a unique position to address this issue. The company acknowledges the evolving nature of online information and the need for adaptable policies.
The updated policy also continues to address the removal of non-consensual explicit images, involuntary fake pornography (deepfakes), and links to sites with exploitative removal practices. A separate process remains for requesting the removal of non-exploitative photos of minors.
However, removal isn't guaranteed. Google requires evidence of explicit or implicit threats or calls to action for harm or harassment alongside the personal information. Simply having your phone number on a Craigslist ad, for example, isn't sufficient for removal. Removing information from data brokers requires a different approach.
To request removal, users must complete a detailed form including URLs, Google Search URLs, and screenshots of the offending content. Google may request further information to verify identity. Moderators evaluate the content to ensure they aren't limiting access to broadly useful information, and they won't remove content considered part of the public record from official sources or deemed newsworthy or professionally relevant.
Successful requests may result in complete URL removal or removal only from searches including specific identifying information. Crucially, removal from Google search results doesn't delete the information from the internet; users should contact the hosting site directly for complete removal.
While a positive step, this policy faces limitations, particularly in the US. Europe's GDPR offers stronger "right to be forgotten" provisions. Until similar comprehensive privacy protections are implemented in the US, Google's intervention in search results will likely remain limited.
