Right on cue, Apple Music Classical is here to liven up your music library
Apple Music Classical: A Deep Dive into the New Classical Music App
Apple Music Classical, a new addition to the Apple Music family, boasts over 5 million classical music tracks. This guide will help you navigate its features and integrate it with your existing Apple Music experience. It's included free with your Apple Music subscription and currently available as a separate iOS app, with an Android version promised soon. A web player is not yet available.
The dedicated app is designed to address the unique organizational needs of classical music. Its longer pieces and multiple movements necessitate a more sophisticated search and browsing system.
Navigating the App
The Browse tab allows for detailed searching by composer, period, genre, conductor, orchestra, soloist, and instrument. This section also highlights new releases, popular selections, and editor's picks.
The "now playing" card (accessible from the bottom of the screen) provides an "info" button (i) for accessing related works by the same composer, conductor, orchestra, or from the same composition. It also indicates Dolby Atmos availability for Spatial Audio. Enable Dolby Atmos in your device's Settings (Music > Audio > Dolby Atmos on iPhones/iPads).
The Search tab offers extensive search options, including composer, performer, recording name, and even nicknames of pieces (e.g., searching "emperor" finds Beethoven's Concerto No. 5).
Adding tracks to your library is done via the plus ( ) icon on search results and individual pages. Create playlists using the three-dot menu next to tracks or on listing pages.
Integrating with the Main Apple Music App
Apple Music Classical and the standard Apple Music app interact in specific ways. Accessing your Library in the Classical app shows only classical music. The main Apple Music app's Library, however, displays all your music, including classical tracks. This consistency applies across all Apple Music platforms (Android, web, macOS).
Note that the Apple Music Classical app currently lacks shuffle and offline download functionality. Use the main Apple Music app for these features. To download classical tracks for offline listening, go to the Library tab in the main app, open the relevant playlist or album, and tap the download arrow (top right).
While the main Apple Music app doesn't offer the same detailed browsing options as the Classical app, adding classical works to playlists in either app doesn't automatically add them to your library. This setting can be controlled in your device's Settings (Music > Add Playlist Songs). For extensive classical music management, the dedicated Apple Music Classical app is recommended.
