Always-On Displays: Customization Guide for iPhone, Galaxy, and Pixel Phones
Many modern smartphones boast an always-on display (AOD) feature, offering a glimpse of time, date, and notifications even when locked. While convenient, AOD's default settings might not suit everyone. This guide details how to customize AOD on iPhones, Galaxy phones, and Pixel phones.
iPhone (iPhone 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max)
The iPhone's AOD is enabled by default. To toggle it, navigate to Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display. Here, you can also control Show Wallpaper and Show Notifications. Adjust the screen lock time via Auto-Lock (also in Display & Brightness). Widget and lock screen appearance changes are made by long-pressing the lock screen, then selecting Customize (to edit the current screen) or (to create a new one). You can personalize the time, date, and widgets (weather, battery, etc.). The bottom-left icon toggles the lock screen depth effect, and the bottom-right icon switches between light and dark mode. Refer to our iPhone lock screen customization guide for more details.
Samsung Galaxy Phones
Most recent Galaxy phones feature AOD. Set the screen timeout (affecting AOD activation) in Settings > Display > Screen timeout. Enable AOD in Settings > Lock screen > Always On Display, choosing between Show always or Show as scheduled (for nighttime disabling). Adjust AOD brightness, orientation, and music information display within the same menu. Customize the clock style and color via Clock style. Long-pressing the lock screen allows further customization, including notification previews (full or icons), wallpaper selection, and corner shortcuts.
Google Pixel Phones
Pixel phones also include AOD, enabled by default. Control it via the Always show time and info toggle in Settings > Display > Lock screen. Brightness scheduling isn't available; AOD mirrors the lock screen, dimming elements and removing the wallpaper. Screen timeout is adjusted in Settings > Display > Screen timeout. The Lock screen settings page lets you add lock screen text (including contact details), change shortcuts, and toggle the Dynamic clock (adjusting clock size based on on-screen content). For clock style and notification handling, go to Settings > Wallpaper & style > Lock screen. Swipe to change clock styles and adjust clock size and color.
