Keep your favorite apps always on top with Windows PowerToys! Need a calculator or document constantly visible? PowerToys' Always On Top feature makes it easy. Here's how to set it up and customize it to your liking.

Setting up Always On Top

1. Download PowerToys from the Microsoft Store. It should launch automatically after installation.

2. In the PowerToys sidebar, select Always on Top. The default keyboard shortcut is Windows key Ctrl T, but you can change this later.

3. You're all set! Open the desired window and use the shortcut to pin it. Use the same shortcut to unpin.

Customizing Always On Top

PowerToys lets you adjust the appearance and behavior of the pinned window.

1. Open PowerToys and navigate to the Always On Top section. (Use the Windows search bar if you can't find it.)

2. Click Open Settings. Under Appearance & Behavior, you can:

  • Remove the border: Toggle the Show border around the pinned window switch.
  • Change the border color: Select Custom color from the Color mode dropdown and use the color picker.
  • Adjust border transparency: Use the Opacity slider. Changes are reflected in real-time.
  • Adjust border thickness: Use the Thickness slider. Changes are reflected in real-time.

You can also disable the pinning sound effect in the Sound settings. Additionally, you can exclude specific apps from being pinned and change the keyboard shortcut under the Activation settings (using the pencil icon). Choose a shortcut not already in use to avoid conflicts.
