How to Change Windows SmartScreen Settings in Windows 10
Windows SmartScreen: Protective Shield to Enhance Computer Security
Windows SmartScreen helps you improve your computer security by issuing warnings before running unknown applications and files from the Internet. When you download an unknown file or open any potentially unsafe file, Windows displays a warning and confirms that you are aware of it before accessing the file. If an application or file is blocked by Windows SmartScreen, you can choose to unblock based on the level of trust.
This article describes three ways to enable or disable Windows SmartScreen: Control Panel, Windows Security Center, and Group Policy Editor.
Method 1: Enable or disable SmartScreen through the control panel
This method is suitable for Windows 8 and older versions of Windows 10. If you have updated your computer to the Windows 10 Creator Update, please refer to Method 2.
Step 1: Use WinX shortcut keys to open the control panel. Press the Windows logo key X, and then press the P key on the keyboard.
Step 2: In the control panel, click System and Security.
Step 3: Click the Safety and Maintenance icon.
Step 4: Click to change the Windows SmartScreen settings link.
Step 5: You will be prompted to select how Windows SmartScreen handles unrecognized applications. Select Do not perform any action to close Windows SmartScreen.
Or, if SmartScreen is disabled unexpectedly, select to issue a warning before running the unrecognized application, and then click OK.
In Windows 10 Creator Update and later, the SmartScreen Filter is part of the Windows Security Center. You can change its settings by following the steps below:
Step 1: Open the Windows Security Center. You can quickly open it by clicking the shield icon in the taskbar.
Step 2: Click the Apps and Browser Controls section in the window.
Step 3: Under Check apps and files, select Block , Warning (default) or Close to set the required options.
If you turn off Windows SmartScreen, you will see a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark "!" and "" closed. Your device may have a vulnerability. ".
Method 3: Enable or disable Windows SmartScreen through Group Policy
This method allows you to easily manage the behavior of Windows SmartScreen.
Step 1: Open the local Group Policy Editor. Press the Win R shortcut key to open the Run dialog box. Then type gpedit.msc and click OK.
Step 2: In the left pane of the local Group Policy Editor, navigate to the following location:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer. In the right pane of File Explorer , double-click to configure Windows SmartScreen policy to edit.
Step 3: Select the Enabled option. Then click the Apply button, and finally click OK .
