Linux Kernel 6.13 First Candidate (RC1) Release

Linus Torvalds released the first version candidate (RC1) of Linux Kernel 6.13 on December 1, 2024. This version marks the end of the merge window for this kernel version. Linux Kernel 6.13-rc1 introduces a large number of updates and architectural improvements in various subsystems.

Linux Kernel 6.13 RC1 Released!

Main improvements:

  • Development cycle: It is worth noting that this development cycle avoids holidays for the first time, providing sufficient time for the release of stable versions and the development of version 6.14.

  • Subsystem update: A large number of updates covering multiple kernel fields: core system components (virtual file systems, process management, memory management, lock mechanisms, schedulers, etc.) have been improved; updates to ARM64, x86, RISC-V, PowerPC and S390 architectures; comprehensive upgrades to USB, Thunderbolt drivers, graphics drivers (DRM), input device support, hardware monitoring drivers, and device tree support.

  • Key technical contributions: File system and storage (OverlayFS, ext4, BTRFS, F2FS, NFS client); security and access control (AppArmor, SELinux, Seccomp, KCSAN); performance and tracking (ftrace, tracking tools, performance events, eBPF); power management (ACPI, thermal control, power management optimization).

  • Bcachefs missing: Due to the ban on developer Kent Overstreet, the Bcachefs update is not included in this version.

  • Estimated release time of the final version: According to previous release cycles, the final version of Linux 6.13 is expected to be released within 6-8 weeks after the release of 6.13-rc1, that is, from mid-to-late January 2025.

Test invitation:

Encourage users and developers to fully test this version candidate. Linux kernel 6.13-rc1 can be downloaded from the Kernel.org website or Linus Torvalds' git repository. The development team expects the 6.14 version to be smaller in size to cope with the reduction in contributions during holidays.
