LXD 6.1 Released With Automatic IP Allocation, VM Core Pinning And More
LXD 6.1, the inaugural release in the 6.x series, brings substantial enhancements to container and virtual machine management. This update prioritizes network capabilities, VM performance optimization, and robust system security.
Key Features:
-
Automated IP Allocation (OVN): LXD 6.1 automates IP address assignment for OVN network forwards and load balancers using the
--allocate
flag, eliminating manual configuration. -
Improved VM Performance (Core Pinning): Automatic core pinning for QEMU processes enhances VM performance, particularly for latency-sensitive applications. The scheduler dynamically manages core assignments.
-
Enhanced Storage: Support for the Dell Powerflex Storage Data Client (SDC) kernel driver offers an alternative to NVME over TCP for Powerflex storage. LXD defaults to NVME, falling back to SDC if necessary.
-
Security Hardening: The removal of the trust password feature strengthens security by requiring certificates or join tokens for API access.
mknod
syscall interception is now aligned with kernel standards, requiringCAP_MKNOD
. -
Network Security: Improved network security by blocking external DNS traffic to dnsmasq on bridges with routable subnets.
-
Additional Improvements: Support for hosts with over 64 CPUs, fixes for long device names in VMs, and removal of armhf support for Ceph. See the changelog for a complete list.
