Android's Google Assistant Is Getting Downgraded
Google Assistant is being phased out and replaced by Gemini on Android. While Google claims continued investment in Assistant, several key features are being removed. This isn't the first time Google has cut Assistant features, but this round impacts functionalities some users still rely on.
The transition to Gemini, which began optionally in February 2024, is accelerating. Google has been actively promoting Gemini, and its complete takeover of Assistant's role is imminent within the next few months.

The future of Google Assistant remains uncertain, but the shift to Gemini is undeniable. Access to Assistant is already becoming more difficult, requiring a new swipe method in Settings. Seven more features are slated for removal:
- Photo Management: Voice commands for favoriting, sharing, and location/time information of photos (alternatives exist in Google Photos and on smart displays/tablets).
- Smart Display/Ambient Screen Control: Voice control for photo frame and ambient screen settings (manual adjustments remain possible).
- Live Conversation Translation: Interpreter mode for live conversations (single word/phrase translation will persist).
- Birthday Reminders in Routines: (Birthdays reminders can still be set manually).
- Family Bell Scheduling: This functionality will be discontinued.
- Daily Updates (Weather, etc.): Custom routines can replicate this.
- Car Accessory Integration: Bluetooth and AUX integration with car accessories will no longer be supported.
While not the most widely used features, their removal will affect some users. The lack of a specific timeline for removal, coupled with only vague notifications of upcoming feature sunsetting, is frustrating.
With Gemini taking center stage, users dissatisfied with the change may want to reconsider Samsung's Bixby as an alternative.
