Microsoft hasn't officially confirmed gamepad keyboard shortcut customization in Windows 11. Gamers accustomed to SteamOS keyboard controls might need a brief adjustment period when switching. However, this shouldn't significantly impact the average handheld PC gamer.

To enable the gamepad keyboard layout, update to Windows 11 Release Preview (build 26100.3613 or later). Open the on-screen keyboard (by tapping a text field or, if you lack a touchscreen, navigating to Settings > Personalization > Text Input > Open keyboard). Tap the keyboard's settings cog. Select "Gamepad" from the "keyboard layout" dropdown. The on-screen keyboard will switch to the larger gamepad layout.

Currently, the gamepad keyboard is exclusive to Windows Insiders. A wider release is expected soon, though no firm date has been announced. Windows 10 users (facing end-of-service in October) should consider third-party solutions like Controller Companion.
