Unlocking Fast Travel in Mudborne: A Guide to the Gateway Nexus
Early in your Mudborne adventure, you'll spot a peculiar stone structure atop the Carpenter's Shop. After obtaining the loft key and accessing your home's roof, a new dimension opens – quite literally! Using frogs with specific genetic codes, you'll activate portals connecting different worlds.
This warm-hued realm, nestled between the waking and dream worlds, is known as the Gateway Nexus. By activating access points across Mudborne's maps, you'll unlock fast travel between areas, eliminating tedious back-and-forth journeys.
Exploring the Spawning Pools and their dream counterparts involves significant travel. This increases dramatically after unlocking the Northern Pool, opening four new areas: the Kindergarten, Climate Control, Residential District, and the Central Junction (accessed after activating the North Reflection Pool with Dendro).
However, a faster method exists: the Gateway Nexus. After retrieving the Loft Key from the dream world and giving it to Hopert, you can access the Carpenter's Shop roof.
This reveals the mysterious stone archway. Activating each archway requires three frogs: one with specific traits (displayed centrally on the Gateway Nexus portal menu) and two of any type (genetics are less important).
For easy access, bring high Amplitude frogs. You'll often need to activate a switch on the other side of the portal.
The Gateway Nexus, significantly smaller than the main maps, houses numerous portals, most initially inactive. Explore to discover helpful features like lifts (crucial for the Kindergarten), an extra home with storage, and even small satellite worlds that shed light on the game's central mystery.
Successfully placing frogs activates the portal permanently in both worlds and the Nexus. Your map will display these portals, each marked with a symbol indicating its corresponding location on another map.
A prime example: a quick route between the Central Junction and your Carpenter's Shop home. The Nexus portal northeast of Dendro's camp connects to a spot near your house within the Nexus, a short hop from the portal leading to your shop's roof.
