Unity Lays Off More Employees With 5AM Emails and Bad Communication

Unity continues to lay off employees. The layoffs seem to be over after 25% of their jobs have been laid off this fiscal year (costs up to $205 million).

Reports from former employees show that more teams are suffering from sudden layoffs.

More layoffs, more confusion

One of the affected employees was Shanee Nishry, the director of behavior package technology, whose entire team was laid off. As a background complement, the behavior package is a tool in Unity that controls NPCs and objects. Nishry actually created the tool in his spare time before it became a core part of the Unity engine - now seeing their entire team be disbanded.

Nishry has requested Unity to open source the tool, but there is no news yet whether it will do so.

Another former employee, Unity’s chief game designer André de Miranda Cardoso, also said their layoffs were completely unexpected.

5 a.m. layoff email

What’s even more frustrating is that some employees received a layoff email notification from the noreply@unity address at 5 a.m.

Peter Roe, a former senior technical artist in Unity, wrote on LinkedIn:

“At 5 a.m. I received an email from 'noreply@unity' telling me that my position has been 'cancelled' and that I will lose access to the system by the end of the day, which felt very sudden and unhuman. Unity had to improve the way it treats employees during tough times like this.”

It's heartbreaking.

Unity's "reset" continues

The layoffs are part of Unity’s ongoing “restructuring plan” that the company claims will lead to “decent” revenue growth and better financial position .

The massive adjustment began last year after CEO John Riccitiello left office due to a runtime expense disaster. His successor Matthew Bromberg tried to rebuild trust by canceling the revised runtime expenses, but the company's restructuring efforts did not slow down.

It seems that Unity’s reset means more layoffs — and more early morning farewell emails.
