How to split screen in Excel vertically and horizontally
This tutorial shows you how to use Excel's split screen feature to view multiple sections of a worksheet simultaneously, facilitating data comparison within large datasets.
Splitting the Worksheet:
Excel's split screen functionality is straightforward. To divide your worksheet into two or four panes:
- Select: Choose the cell, row, or column that defines the split boundary. The split will appear above and to the left of your selection.
- Split: On the "View" tab, in the "Window" group, click the "Split" button.
The worksheet will be divided based on your selection – horizontally, vertically, or both. Each pane will have independent scrollbars.
Vertical Split (Columns):
To split vertically, select the column to the right of where you want the split. This creates two vertical panes.
Example: To compare item details (columns A-C) and sales figures (columns D-H), select column D.
→
Horizontal Split (Rows):
To split horizontally, select the row below where you want the split. This creates two horizontal panes.
Example: To compare data for "East" and "West" regions (assuming "West" data starts on row 10), select row 10.
→
Four-Pane Split:
To create four panes, select the cell located above and to the left of the desired split point and then click "Split."
Example: Selecting cell G10 divides the worksheet into four sections.
Adjusting the Split:
The split bars can be dragged to reposition the panes.
Removing the Split:
Click the "Split" button again, or double-click a split bar to remove the split.
Important Note: The split screen feature only works within a single worksheet. To view two different worksheets simultaneously, you'll need to use other methods, such as opening the workbook in two separate windows.
