Nintendo Switch Reveals Virtual Game Cards To Make Owning Multiple Consoles More Flexible
Nintendo Switch's new feature simplifies digital game sharing between consoles. Previously, transferring digital games was cumbersome, requiring access to the purchasing account. The new system, announced at the latest Nintendo Direct, streamlines this process, although with limitations.
The March 27th Nintendo Direct introduced Virtual Game Cards, launching in late April, enabling Switch owners to "eject" and "install" digital games between two consoles, provided the owning account is on both. The system also lets users lend digital games to Family Group members, one game per member for up to two weeks.
Virtual Game Cards Mimic Physical Game Sharing
Despite being digital, Virtual Game Cards necessitate an initial local wireless connection between Switches for game transfers. Post-linking, local connection isn't always required, but the feature remains limited to two systems per account. The local wireless link is also needed for Family Group lending.
Games Unveiled at the March 2025 Nintendo Direct
The March Nintendo Direct showcased several new Switch titles.
These local wireless limitations hinder remote sharing, particularly for Family Group members. The two-week lending limit might make physical cartridges more practical in some cases. However, the feature simplifies game transfers between two personal Switches or nearby Family Group members.
Virtual Game Cards: Potentially Too Restrictive
While a welcome addition, Virtual Game Cards' limitations might prove inconvenient, especially compared to other platforms. Steam Family Sharing, for instance, doesn't require local connections and allows unlimited game sharing.
Switch 2 Leaks Suggest Improved Online Capabilities
Recent Switch 2 leaks hint at faster Wi-Fi, potentially improving online play.
Nintendo's restrictions on Virtual Game Cards are likely intentional, targeting families and close friends. By mimicking physical game sharing, the system introduces limitations, yet still improves game transfers between personal Switches.
