The New CSS-Tricks Video Intro by dina Amin
You know our video tutorials? Although not particularly frequent, I have been doing it for a long time and still like it and plan to continue doing it. I'll post them here and you can subscribe on YouTube as well.
Over the years, I have used several different custom video title animations, all made by people who are better at it than I do. In May this year, I asked around and got some good suggestions, but nothing better than Matthias recommending Marc, and then Marc contacted me dina Amin.
Dina's works are eye-catching: It's great! She is good at stop-motion animation and many breakthrough things:
We discuss and plan the project. She said:
I worked with Assem Kamal to create a new opening animation for the CSS-Tricks YouTube channel. We wanted to make a very short, concise but fun animation so that viewers on YouTube wouldn't skip the opening credits or wouldn't get bored if they watched several CSS-Tricks videos in a row.
She did a lot of research and asked a series of questions. I like that she is very aware of the role of opening credits like this in the video, especially in the tutorial. Not too long, not annoying in any way. It has to be detailed enough that it is almost a pleasure to watch it repeatedly.
The old video title starts with the keyboard:
We started with Apple keyboard because we wanted to keep things that Chris' audiences could resonate with in the original title, and most importantly because I wanted to take the keyboard apart!
"Did we remove the keyboard?!" Yes, we remove it. It's easy to find a lot of broken Apple keyboards, which is a very well-designed product, all the parts are very beautifully combined with the fewest parts, but only Apple can repair this product. You can't take out your screwdriver set, open it and repair a defective button connection. So a lot of such keyboards are thrown away because it's too expensive to repair in a country like Egypt. We got three keyboards, we took one off while we were making the animation and used different keys from the other two keyboards to make the stretched keys.
It's interesting to see some behind-the-scenes tidbits in her Instagram Stories:
Another connection to the original title is the idea of the website as a component and building the layout. This is referenced in the original title with only some background sketches, and now comes to life in this version in the form of a paper prototype.
We thought of the process of showing the “how to make a website” in very abstract steps, where each step quickly transitions and turns into another step. From keyboard clicks to code, then the design module that makes up the website, scrolling to display the CSS-Tricks logo.
All this is done with stop-motion animation! Move parts with your hands, take photos, and make them into video.
Once we got the concept approval and we had the props ready, we spent hours moving the widgets to make all these amazing effects.
Take a look at the time-lapse photography of the creative process!
Eventually I got multiple versions of different aspect ratios and sizes, which is great because I can switch as much as I can and use the version that might be more appropriate in different scenarios. This is the main version!
I've started putting these in the beginning and end of a video like this.
Thanks to dina and Assam!
