Pausing a GIF with details/summary
Steve Faulkner provides a clever solution: display a (animated) GIF and overlay a pause/play button on it - it's actually a<details></details> /<summary></summary> element. When switching, the internal (non-animated) JPG overwrites the GIF, effectively "pauses" it.
Adrian Roselli calls it a "quick and easy" method to pause, stop, hide with WCAG success standard 2.2.2.
I modified this, replaced all images so that it first displays the JPG, and added loading="lazy" attribute on the image. This seems to effectively prevent the GIF from loading before you explicitly press play, which is also a good choice:
