'Multi-Language' Switch 2 In Japan Feels Like An Anti-Scalper Strategy
Nintendo's Switch 2 launch in Japan features a unique pricing and region-locking strategy. The standard Japanese model, retailing at ¥49,980 (approximately $339 USD), is limited to Japanese language and games only. This contrasts sharply with the multi-language version, priced at ¥69,980 (approximately $475 USD), available exclusively through My Nintendo Store in Japan. This multi-language model is the same as the international release.
Nintendo's explanation cites regional differences in decision-making. However, this move is widely interpreted as a countermeasure against scalpers who have profited from the region-free nature of the original Switch, reselling Japanese consoles internationally at inflated prices. By region-locking the cheaper model, Nintendo aims to curb this practice. The higher price point of the multi-language Switch 2 in Japan also aligns it with the PlayStation 5's pricing.
The multi-language Switch 2 in Japan is currently available only through a lottery system, with winners announced on April 24th, ahead of the June 5th release date. While this strategy may seem unusual, it ensures that the standard, region-free console will still be available internationally.
