It's Time to Replace Your Galaxy S20 or Galaxy S20 Ultra

Apr 10, 2025 pm 12:27 PM

Samsung Galaxy S20 series mobile phone software support has officially ended. Although the Galaxy S20 series receives extended support, it no longer receives operating system or security updates. If you own a Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, or S20 Ultra, maybe it's time to consider an upgrade.

Samsung officially terminated the software support of the Galaxy S20 series when it launched a large Android 15 update for a number of mobile phones. The Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra were released in March 2020 and initially promised only four years of updates and will no longer receive any updates after that.

The software currently running of these phones — Android 13 based on One UI 5 and the March 2025 security updates — will no longer be updated, and all software run by remaining users will be outdated and vulnerable to security vulnerabilities, errors and performance degradation.

This week, Samsung officially removed the Galaxy S20 series from its update plan, which details all devices that are still eligible for updates. These phones are no longer eligible for new versions of Android, nor will they receive monthly, quarterly, or even semi-annual software patches. This works with the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus, and S20 Ultra in LTE and 5G versions. It is worth mentioning that the Galaxy S20 FE is still eligible for updates.

As we all know, the support time for mobile phone software updates is limited, and after that, manufacturers must focus on updated devices. Both Samsung and Google are constantly improving in this regard, with the recently released phones guaranteeing a 7-year OS update, but older devices aren't that lucky. At the time, the Galaxy S20 series had the longest service life offered by Samsung, promising three operating system upgrades and four years of support.

It's Time to Replace Your Galaxy S20 or Galaxy S20 Ultra Related##### Your Android device is too old to receive updates, what should I do now?

Here are the meanings that your phone is no longer supported.

Samsung fulfilled its commitment. Even after stopping upgrading a new version of Android for the Galaxy S20 series, it continues to push security updates developed by Google. The same four-year commitments include the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, although they are still receiving quarterly updates at this time. Samsung may extend the update to the Note 20 series until later this year.

In fact, when Android 14 was released last year, Samsung could have completely stopped supporting the once-popular S20 series, but instead offered quarterly security updates instead, instead of phasing out these devices. This keeps these phones updated, safe and reliable for another year.

However, if you're still using the old Galaxy S20 series, you should seriously consider replacing a new phone. This is the end of this road. Although you don't have to replace it immediately, the sooner the better. Additionally, that five years ago phone may have degraded performance, poor battery life, and lacks many interesting new features.

Once an Android phone does not receive security updates for several months, it faces various vulnerabilities. Think of all the sensitive data on your phone, from photos and videos to passwords, banking apps and more. You need to use the latest updates to protect everything, and the Galaxy S20 no longer receives these updates.

So, which phone should you buy to replace that aging Galaxy S20 Ultra? I personally recommend the Galaxy S25 Plus, I have reviewed this phone and I like it very much. In fact, I took the Galaxy S25 Ultra back and replaced it with the Plus model, and it's that good. Or, check out the links below to learn about the best choices this year.
