Wingspan: Complete Guide
Wingspan: Bird lovers’ wildlife reserve construction game guide
Wingspan is a strategy board game where players play bird lovers with the goal of attracting the best birds in their own wildlife reserves. In the game, you will collect different birds from 170 unique bird cards and place them in your birdhouse to earn food and bird eggs, ultimately getting a victory point.
For newbies in Wingspan, the rules of the game may seem a bit complicated. A large number of cards and resources can be overwhelming. Therefore, this guide will provide you with all the knowledge you need to know about Wingspan game.
Game preparation
Wingspan supports 1-5 players and is relatively simple to set (the rules of single player game are slightly different, which will be described in detail later).
Follow these steps to set up the game:
- Shuffle: Shuffle the bird cards next to the three-grid bird tray; place the three bird cards facing up in the tray. Similarly, wash the reward cards and place them next to the tray.
- Prepare resources: Separate bird eggs and food chips and stack them separately for easy access by all players.
- Build a feeder: Build a feeder (used as a game dice tower) and put food dice in it.
- Distribution Game Board: Distribute player game boards and reference cards to each player.
- Place the target card: Place the target board and four random target cards for easy viewing by all players.
- Distribution of Initial Cards: Distribute five bird cards, two reward cards and one for each food chip to each player.
Conditions for winning
In Wingspan, you need to win the game with the following goals:
- Add birds to your reserve
- spawning
- Store food
- Enlarge the birds
- Complete the end of the round
- Complete the reward card goal
All of the above goals will bring you different numbers of win points , and the total score will be calculated after the game is over. The one with the most winning points wins. There are many ways to achieve the above goals, which will be described in detail below.
Round process
Wingspan plays four rounds of games in total, and players perform a certain number of rounds in each round. The number of turns is represented by the action block. At the beginning of the game, each player has eight action blocks, so there are eight rounds .
action | Details |
---|---|
Place birds | You can place a bird card in your hand at the far left of any row of the player's game board, provided the bird matches the selected habitat and you have enough bird eggs and food to pay for the bird card. |
Get food | Place an action block at the far left of the Player's Game Board "Get Food" row and obtain food chips from the resource based on the dice available in the feeder. |
spawning | Place an action block at the available position on the far left of the Player's Game Board "Spawning" row and lay the corresponding number of bird eggs . |
Draw bird cards | Place an action block at the available position on the far left of the Player's Game Board "Take Cards" row and draw the corresponding number of bird cards . |
You can perform any action once per turn. However, you can perform the same action multiple times in a round . It all depends on your strategy. We will describe all of these actions in detail below.
Additionally, after you get food, lay eggs, or draw a bird card, if it is stated on the bird card that it is possible to activate, you can choose to activate the abilities of any bird in the corresponding row (these abilities are always optional).
Place birds
When you perform this action, place your action block in the column where you will be placing the birds . Each bird card you want to place has a food cost in the upper left corner. If you cannot pay for that cost, you cannot place the bird this round .
Get food
When you perform this action, place an action block at the far left of the Get Food row. For each food dice in that position, you can take one food dice from the feeder to get the corresponding food chips displayed on the dice surface.
spawning
Similar to the Get Food action, when you perform this action, you must place an action block at the available location to the far left of the Egg Spawn row. For each bird egg in that position, you can lay one and place these eggs on any available bird card, any color combination.
Draw bird cards
Finally, when you perform this action, you must place an action block at the far left of the "Pick Bird Card" row. Draw cards of the same number as shown in this position from the bird tray or bird card stack .
Bird abilities
You can also activate any available bird card abilities throughout the game. Bird abilities can be activated in one of three ways.
- When Placed: When you place a bird card with this bird ability, you can use the ability immediately.
- When activated: When you complete the turn, you can activate the ability of any bird card in the corresponding row.
- Once between turns: between your turns, you can activate the bird card's ability once.
End of round
This round ends once all players have used up all available action blocks. After that, the player must perform the following steps before proceeding to the next round.
- Remove all action blocks from the player game board
- Scoring round end goal
- Discard all bird cards facing up on the bird tray
You will end the goal by placing an action block on the target board.
The target board has two sides . One side is more competitive, and the first, second and third place rewards are given according to the player ranking; the other side is less competitive, and the numbers 1 to 5 are simply marked next to the target.
Depending on the end of the turn, if you use the green side, place your block on the first, second or third place square based on your ranking among other players .
Or, if you use the blue side, place your action block on a number representing the number of times you complete the target .
Final score calculation
After completing the above steps, you will be on the next round as usual, but the number of action blocks is reduced by one because one action block has been placed on the target board. The next three rounds of games will be played as usual, and the game will end.
You will then calculate the game score based on the criteria listed in the Winning Conditions section above . After the end of the four rounds, the one with the most winning points wins!
Victory conditions | Victory Point |
---|---|
birds | Number of cards |
Reward card | Number of cards |
End of round goal | Number of target boards |
Bird egg | 1 |
Food on the card | 1 |
Collected cards | 1 |

Now that you have a look at the basic gameplay of Wingspan, you may be wondering what the best strategy to win the game is .
The strategies are diverse and complex , mainly depending on the following points:
- Reward card
- Bird card in hand
