docker Persistent storage

In Docker containers, files are usually not persisted, and methods are required to persist files: use data volumes, share the file system between containers, and files are retained after the container is stopped. Use Docker volumes, managed by Docker, similar to data volumes. Use local storage, for temporary storage only, data is lost after the container restarts. Using persistent storage, provided by third-party storage providers, persisting large data sets.

How to persist files in a Docker container

In Docker containers, files are usually not persisted, i.e., after the container is restarted, the files will be deleted. In order to persist files, there are several ways:

1. Use data volumes

A data volume is a persistent storage that can be used to share file systems between containers. When the container stops running, the files in the data volume will be retained. To use a data volume, you can use the -v option to mount the directory on the host to the directory in the container when creating or running the container:

docker run -v /host-path:/container-path image-name

Copy after login

2. Using Docker volumes

Docker volumes are similar to data volumes, but they are managed by Docker rather than by the host file system. Create and mount Docker volumes into containers:

docker volume create volume-name docker run -v volume-name:/container-path image-name

Copy after login

3. Use local storage

For containers that only need to temporarily store data, local storage can be used. Local storage saves data in the container's file system, but it won't persist, i.e. data will be lost after the container restarts.

4. Use persistent storage

Persistent storage can be used for containers that need to persist in storing large data sets or important data. Persistent storage is provided by third-party storage providers such as Amazon EBS, Azure Blob Storage, or Google Cloud Storage. To use persistent storage, you need to create a persistent storage volume and mount it into a container.

Choosing the right method depends on the specific use case and data persistence requirements.
