Docker provides three networking modes: bridge mode: create an independent virtual network interface for containers to realize external network connections. Host mode: bind the container network interface to the host to share the host network resources. Container Mode: Connect to the network namespace of other containers, sharing their network interface and IP addresses.

How to connect to Docker

Docker is a container virtualization platform that decouples applications from infrastructure. In order to run applications in Docker containers, we need to make sure they have access to the network.

Container networking mode

Docker provides three container networking modes:

 • Bridge mode: Creates a separate virtual network interface for the container, able to communicate with the host and external networks.
 • Host mode: binds the container's network interface directly to the host's network interface, and shares the host's IP address and port range.
 • Container Mode: Connect the container to the network namespace of another container, sharing the network interface and IP address of the container.

Bridge mode

Bridge mode is the most commonly used mode. It assigns a virtual network interface to each container and connects to the host's physical network interface through a virtual bridge. Using bridge mode, the container can access the external network but does not have a direct connection to the host.

Configure the bridge mode

To configure bridge mode, you can specify the --net flag when creating the container, as shown below:

docker run --name my-container --net bridge -it ubuntu:latest

Copy after login

Host Mode

Host mode is often used for applications that require direct access to the host network stack. Using host mode, the container's network interface is directly bound to the host's network interface. This means that the container will share the host's IP address and port range.

Configure host mode

To configure host mode, you can specify --net=host flag when creating the container, as shown below:

docker run --name my-container --net=host -it ubuntu:latest

Copy after login

Container Mode

Container mode allows the container to connect to another container's network namespace. Using container mode, containers can share network interfaces and IP addresses of other containers.

Configure container mode

To configure container mode, you can specify --net=container:<container-name></container-name> flag when creating the container, as shown below:

docker run --name my-container --net=container:other-container -it ubuntu:latest

Copy after login
