Bungie Announces 'The Edge Of Fate' Expansion, With An Unexpected Focus

Well, that time was yesterday. Not too shabby.

Bungie has revealed the real name of the codeword Apollo expansion, actually called The Edge of Fate. There will be a livestream reveal and look at it on Tuesday, May 6 at 9 AM PT, 12 PM ET.

All we have so far is the news that this is a Nine-focused expansion. That is…extremely surprising to me. What I figured is that we’re about to head to a new solar system in the commandeered Dreadnaught, but…The Nine? I mean I feel like we will still leave the system, but it’s just a surprising focus for the entire expansion.

We still know barely anything about The Nine after all this time. There are myths and rumors about what they actually might be, with some even believing they’re a meta group that look at Destiny from afar knowing it’s a video game. But who knows. We what seen from The Nine so far is mainly:

• Xur, the devotee (slave?) of The Nine who shows up each week to sell us stuff.
• Trials of the Nine, the PvP mode
• Season of the Drifter, which focused on some Nine storylines including Drifter’s relationship with its Emissary, a former Awoken.
• Prophecy, the Nine-focused dungeon that predicted the events of the Pyramid invasion and Beyond Light
• Dares of Eternity, a Nine-designed…game show hosted by a magic horse.
• The upcoming Rite of the Nine, a revisitation of old dungeons that will dole out Nine-reskinned weapons.

Now, given that The Edge of Fate is Nine-themed, I’m wondering if Rite of the Nine itself is going to have some specific story component to lead into the events of the expansion. I mean, that seems like a bit too much of a coincidence for that not to be the case. The Nine have only really showed up for special events all this time, but yes, it appears we are now going to more directly interact with a group that sends us magic horses to play game shows.

I mean, I’m excited. I know we’re heading into a smaller scale expansion, but I genuinely have no idea where this is going given what a mystery the Nine have been for most of the decade. And despite my predictions, this expansion and the launch of Frontiers is not going to be delayed, and should be here this July, by current estimations. Until then, we wait for the May showcase.
