'RuneScape: Dragonwilds' Impressions: Fresh Take On Survival Games
After a couple of hours playing RuneScape: Dragonwilds, I'm incredibly impressed and excited for its future. It's already far more than just another crafting survival game.
Launched unexpectedly this week on Steam Early Access (just weeks after its announcement), Dragonwilds boasts surprising polish and a wealth of features. An extensive roadmap promises even more content and features down the line.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds First Impressions
While character creation is currently basic (expect expansion here), offering body type, hair, eye color, and a few other options, it's sufficient to begin.
The game opens with a stunning illustrated cutscene – high-quality motion graphics, art, and voice acting, a surprising feat for an Early Access title. This sets a positive tone for the entire experience.
Like most survival games, you'll meet a helpful NPC who guides you through initial tasks: gathering sticks, rocks, and mastering survival basics. However, Dragonwilds' unique element shines through immediately.
Mirroring the main RuneScape game, you earn XP for virtually every action. This classic MMO leveling system is expertly implemented. Wood gathering, tree chopping, crafting – all contribute to skill progression.
Gameplay feels fantastic. The UX is finely tuned; sound and visuals are rewarding, encouraging continued progress. Even simple actions, like picking berries, feel heroic.
Skill development unlocks nuanced abilities. Advanced woodcutting allows overhead chopping of large logs. Sufficient combat experience grants the ability to parry.
This seemingly simple system provides incredibly satisfying progress, fueling addictive gameplay.
Magic adds another exciting layer. Besides standard resources, magical rune stones are found throughout the world. These stones power spells, such as "rocksplosion," which instantly vaporizes rock and rune deposits – both useful and immensely satisfying.
I built a basic house with a bed and storage. Building felt unrushed, a welcome change, though future expansions are anticipated. The presence of NPCs, quests, and explorable areas sets it apart from many similar games.
My first session culminated in dungeon exploration. Combat is solid; my crafted mace and shield allowed blocking, parrying, and dodging, feeling natural and intuitive. I eagerly await further combat development.
Despite only a few hours of gameplay, RuneScape: Dragonwilds shows immense potential. Its unique elements set it apart.
Fans of Old School RuneScape or the modern version will find familiar elements: items, creatures, and NPCs. Even with years away from the main game, I felt a strong wave of nostalgia.
Dragonwilds' polished state is remarkable for an Early Access title. Unlike many others (Valheim, Enshrouded, Rust), it avoids a rocky launch, lacking significant bugs, performance issues, or missing features.
The rapid announcement, promotion, and release within two weeks is astonishing.
Currently available only on PC via Steam Early Access, console versions are planned.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds has a strong start. Jagex's plans for the next year will be crucial. A full release is targeted for early 2026.
