Ultra-Portable Foldable eReaders Are Finally a Reality
Mooink V: The first full-color folding e-reader, with portability upgraded again!
The greatest charm of e-readers is their portability. But what if portability can be further improved? Readmoo's Mooink V is the first full-color folding e-reader built based on this concept.
The Readmoo Mooink V unveiled at the Touch Taiwan Display Technology Trade Show features an 8-inch E Ink Gallery 3 foldable touch screen with a resolution of up to 300 PPI. Weighing about 0.5 pounds, it can be locked in a half-folded state of 90 degrees, providing a reading experience similar to paper books.
While folding screens usually have visible creases, the Mooink V is no exception, with creases that are even more noticeable than folding smartphones. According to New Atlas, this is due to the density of the E Ink display being about four times higher than that of the OLED panel.
Foldable electronic paper is not a completely new technology. The Gallery 3 e-paper display used by Mooink V was first unveiled as a curly Gallery 3 E Ink tablet concept in 2022. Similar technologies are also applied to other concept products, such as BMW's color-changing E Ink concept car, which is often exhibited at auto shows and is constantly upgraded and improved. What makes Mooink V special, however, is that it is a consumer-oriented product that people can actually buy.
The concept of foldable e-reader is very attractive. I recently bought a small 4-inch e-reader for traveling and staying away from home for a long time – folding models like the Mooink V offer similar portability without limiting the type of content I can read on the go. A 4-inch e-reader is enough for most books, but it seems powerless for magazines, comics, news, textbooks or anything that contains images.
However, I'm more interested in the black and white version of Mooink V. The full-color E Ink display is "darier" than the traditional black and white electronic paper display, and has less contrast, so it's hard to read in dim conditions - unless you're sitting in direct sunlight (or in an extremely bright room), you're basically forced to use a front light (strangely, this device seems to lack a front light). While I don't mind sitting in the sun, the Mooink V seems to have a very glossy plastic display layer that is better suited for use in indoor environments that minimize glare.

1 To be fair, I haven't seen Mooink V in person. The color E Ink panel of this device is probably better than what I've tested. Readmoo claims the Gallery 3 display panel is more vivid and refreshed than the common color E Ink screen, so maybe it works fine with dim bedside lights on rainy days, although I doubt it.
The price and time to go to the market of the Mooink V are not yet known. However, the product has been reported to have entered mass production, meaning that the models displayed at the Touch Taiwan show should be roughly the same as the products that Readmoo ends up selling to consumers. It is worth noting that Readmoo is a Taiwanese company whose online stores ship directly to the United States—those goods currently under DDP tariff exemptions may be affected by Donald Trump’s tariff policies.
