Position Sticky and Table Headers
Creating sticky table headers can be surprisingly tricky. While you can't directly apply position: sticky;
to
or

elements, a clever workaround exists: applying it to individual

elements. This is counterintuitive, as you'd normally expect to make the parent element sticky. The reason for this limitation stems from the CSS 2.1 specification;

and

don't support
position: relative
, a prerequisite for position: sticky
.
Two less desirable approaches exist if you're unaware of the
solution:

Abandon table markup: Replace tables with divs and other layout methods. This sacrifices semantic HTML, impacting accessibility and readability for assistive technologies.

Override table styling: Use table elements but completely overwrite their default styles with custom
display
values. This also presents risks, requiring meticulous recreation of semantic roles to maintain accessibility.
However, the simplest and most effective solution is to use sticky
elements. While this might seem unusual—having headers embedded within the table body—it's a functional solution. Imagine using this to create colored header bars separating data groups, such as different sports teams within a larger table.

Responsive design for data tables presents further challenges. The optimal approach depends heavily on the data structure and how it's best presented to the user. Numerous techniques exist, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
