Leveraging Netlify Functions for Email Sending in JAMstack Sites

Need to send emails from your JAMstack website (one without server-side languages)? It's easily achievable using Netlify Functions and an email service API. This guide uses SparkPost as an example, but the principles apply to other services.

Netlify Functions for Sending Emails

The core concept involves a serverless function (like a Netlify Lambda) to act as a secure intermediary between your frontend and the email API. This protects your API key from exposure in your Git repository.

Setting up SparkPost:

  1. Create a SparkPost account and obtain your API key from the dashboard.

Configuring Netlify:

  1. Store your SparkPost API key as a Netlify environment variable. This keeps it secure and out of your codebase.

Using Netlify Dev for Local Development:

Netlify Dev simplifies local testing. It automatically runs your static site generator (e.g., Eleventy) and starts a local server for your functions. The terminal output will show the function server's port (e.g., ◈ Lambda server is listening on 59629).

To create a new function, use the command line:

netlify functions:create --name send-email
Copy after login

Utilizing the SparkPost Node.js Library:

SparkPost provides a Node.js library to simplify API interaction. Create the necessary directory structure:

<code>/project
   ... your website files ...
   /functions/
      /send-email/
         package.json
         send-email.js</code>
Copy after login

Install the library:

npm install sparkpost --save-dev
Copy after login

The send-email.js file will contain the function code:

const SparkPost = require('sparkpost');
const client = new SparkPost(process.env.SPARKPOST);

exports.handler = async (event, context, callback) => {
  try {
    const response = await client.transmissions.send({
      content: {
        from: '[email protected]',
        subject: 'Hello, World!',
        html: '<p>My cool email.</p>'
      },
      recipients: [{ address: '[email protected]' }]
    });
    callback(null, { statusCode: 200, body: JSON.stringify(response) });
  } catch (error) {
    callback(error);
  }
};
Copy after login

Note the use of process.env.SPARKPOST to access the API key from the Netlify environment variable. Remember to consult the SparkPost documentation for comprehensive error handling and advanced features.

Testing the Function:

With Netlify Dev running, access your function via a URL like:

<code>http://localhost:34567/.netlify/functions/send-email</code>
Copy after login

You can use tools like Postman or Insomnia for more sophisticated testing, including sending POST requests with email body and recipient data. Console logging within the function is also helpful for debugging.

This setup enables dynamic email sending capabilities within a JAMstack architecture, maintaining security and leveraging the convenience of Netlify Functions. Remember to adapt the code to your specific email service and requirements.
