Google Photos Now Lets You Convert Standard Photos to Ultra HDR
Ultra HDR: Google Photos' New Image Enhancement
Ultra HDR is a cutting-edge image format offering superior visual quality. Like standard HDR, it packs more data, resulting in brighter highlights, deeper shadows, and richer colors. The key difference? Ultra HDR files also include a standard dynamic range (SDR) version. This ensures compatibility with non-HDR devices, allowing seamless sharing with friends who lack HDR displays.
However, converting SDR images to HDR (or Ultra HDR) has traditionally been complex. Previously, achieving high dynamic range required HDR capture from the outset. But Google Photos is changing that.
Google Photos now offers an in-app Ultra HDR conversion tool, as reported by Android Authority. This allows users to upgrade their SDR images to Ultra HDR directly within the app.
How to Convert Images to Ultra HDR in Google Photos
Before attempting this conversion, ensure you meet two prerequisites:
- Google Photos Version: You need Google Photos version 7.24.0.747539053 or later.
- Server-Side Update: Google must deploy the feature to your app via a server-side update. This means even with the correct version, the feature might not appear immediately. Allow time for the rollout.
Once available, open your image and tap Edit. In the editor, scroll through the bottom tools and select Adjust. You'll find the "Ultra HDR" option, replacing the previous "HDR Effect."
Android Authority's tests show Ultra HDR images clearly labeled, alongside resolution and size details. Interestingly, Ultra HDR files might be smaller than the originals due to the compressed HDR data (gain map). To retain the full original image, consider saving a copy before applying the Ultra HDR effect.
