The outline attribute is not usually used much. Recently, I was asked to study the role of this attribute.

The outline attribute added by CSS2 is translated into Chinese as outer outline.

What is the outline of the horse?

Contour refers to the edge; the periphery of an object or the outer frame of a figure.

In this case, the outer outline is the outer border.

Look at the formal definition: Outline is a line drawn around an element, located outside the edge of the border, which can highlight the element. The outline attribute sets the outline around the element.

Look at a more practical experience: In the browser, when a link or a radio gets focus by clicking the mouse or using the Tab key, the element will be outlined with a dotted line frame around. This outline dotted box is outline.

Relative positioning will go to the top after relative positioning, absolute positioning is the same, and fixed positioning is the same. Here is the case where z-index is not set. If z-index is set, the stacking order of divs can be changed, which also includes the stacking order of outline.

Summary: The hierarchical order of outline is as follows

  1. Outline is presented differently in different formatting contexts. In block-level elements, the content on both sides can be covered. . Inline elements can overwrite the content above.
  2. Normally, the outline will be displayed normally in the order of the back covering the front (under the same circumstances, it is like there are no floats in the document flow, or they are all floats, and the positioning of z-index does not count)
  3. If the page has floating elements, the outline of the floating element is displayed first, and then the outline of the normal document flow is displayed (the outline of the floating element is overwritten by the outline of no floating elements)
  4. If the page has positioned elements (relative , absolute, fixed (excluding static), after displaying the floating element, the normal document flow is displayed, and then the positioned element is displayed (if z-index is not set, setting it is equivalent to the browser executing other commands), of course Positioned elements can use the z-index attribute to move the element back and forth, but what we are discussing now is the default browser display of outline without setting z-index.
  5. In fact, most outlines are not used like borders. The function of outline is also mentioned above. It is just a small dotted line by default in the browser, which usually needs to be eliminated. For example, outline: none; >
