He was shot! 18 Most Misunderstood User Experience Design Principles_html/css_WEB-ITnose

Jun 24, 2016 am 11:53 AM

Read this very interesting website: http://uxmyths.com/, which talks about some commonly misunderstood user experience theories. Some arguments are quite old, and some may not be accurate. I selected some and recorded them, adding a few notes. :)

1. Users will read the content carefully on the webpage

Inaccurate.

When users read web content, they mostly browse it quickly. Only when the user is very interested in the content, they will read it word by word; good web design can help users browse web content more conveniently and quickly.

Yoyo: Now is the era of information explosion. Users rarely have the energy to read the content carefully. They understand information more by skimming, looking at pictures, reading the first sentence, and reading bold words. Therefore, in the new era, whether you are designing web pages or mobile products, the focus of information, the grasp of user attention, and the rhythm of interface content are the focus of design.

2. All pages of the website need to be reached within 3 clicks

Inaccurate.

Fewer clicks to reach a page will not necessarily make users happier or more efficient.

Yoyo: Users have their own habits when doing things. These habits are the most comfortable for them, but they are not necessarily the most efficient or reasonable. We must also follow this idea when designing products, how to make users the most comfortable, safe and happy to use the product; rather than the most efficient, or even set quantitative standards to require this efficiency, because forced requirements are often counterproductive.

3, users will not use scroll bars

Inaccurate.

Nowadays users are accustomed to using the scroll down function to get more information. Although the position at the top of the page is still the most important, it is not necessary to squeeze all the content at the top of the page.

Yoyo: Especially in the new era of smartphones led by the iPhone, you can see more content by swiping down with your hand, which has become an acceptable and familiar operation method for users. Don’t obsess over putting all the content at the top, but designers should remember that the top is important. Generally speaking, the exposure of the first screen of a web page is much greater than that of the second screen and beyond. For example, according to the real data of the products I have designed, the second screen and subsequent exposures are less than 10% of the first screen.

So in the new era of design, focus on placing important information, place secondary information in a traceable way, and do not place irrelevant information.

4. The design makes the website look better

Inaccurate.

Design is far more than providing a good-looking appearance, design is more important to provide functions, processes, and solve problems.

Yoyo: If designers just make websites look good, all interaction designers will be unemployed first. Even the vision is now being done for the entire product. Brand, user emotions, interaction, and dynamic effects will all be taken into consideration in the visual design. So I don't think there are any designers out there working just to make a website look good.

5. It is difficult and expensive to design websites to be usable by people with disabilities

Inaccurate.

Incorporating the design concept of serving people with disabilities in the early stage will not increase the cost of designing the website too high; the website will therefore serve a wider group of users.

Yoyo: I have done some public welfare design projects, such as the cooperation between Yahoo Mobile Search and AMBER Alert, but I have never been responsible for designing a feature or product that serves people with disabilities. I feel ashamed and hope to have the opportunity to do so in the future. Design some.

6. Design must be original

Not accurate.

Most designers like to redesign rather than refer to existing design forms. They should consider that the existing design has been verified and users are accustomed to it. As a designer, you need to have enough confidence to promote a brand new design.

Yoyo: There is no need to doubt this assumption. In the design teams of Internet companies in the United States, many design supervisors will directly ask their subordinates that the design must be different from the industry. But when doing innovative design, we must remember these points: originate from the root, solve problems and have commercial value, respect the existing habits of the industry and users, and do not innovate for the sake of innovation.

7. The website needs to be revised regularly

Inaccurate.

Users don’t like changes, so website revisions need to stem from deeper needs, rather than just for the sake of revision.

Yoyo: It can solve problems, has commercial value, is driven by new technologies, uses the results of big data analysis, and thinks about revisions from these dimensions.

Don’t revise for the sake of revamping, don’t revise for the sake of looking good.

For successful cases of website revision, see: "Innovating with the old and bringing forth the new!" Redesign of the government website》

8, providing more functions and options, users will be more satisfied

Inaccurate.

Providing choices to make users feel in control is a good thing, but too many choices will make users confused and unable to understand the product.

Yoyo: Provide the best choices, but be few enough. This is true for product design, and so is life.

9. As a product designer, you are very similar to your user group

Inaccurate.

Thinking of users as yourself will bring strong subjective bias, which is very detrimental to design.

Yoyo: Many friends will ask me why a certain product is still used by people, shouldn’t it be eliminated? Why a certain product can make money is completely unimaginable. In fact, this is just because you are not the target user. Even if you are designing a music product and you are also an experienced user who listens to music, you cannot regard yourself as all target users, because you are only one of them.

10, users will make optimal choices when using the website

Inaccurate.

In an ideal world, users would read all the information on your website and then find the content that is most valuable to them. In the real world, users scan the site quickly, find the first piece of content that catches their attention, and then move on.

Yoyo: Users will not make optimal choices, and users will often be biased by other attractive factors. Therefore, we must take these "unscientific and imprecise" factors into consideration when designing products. For example, if you go to the supermarket and want to buy a bottle of water, and when you come out to check out, you buy Coke, chewing gum, potato chips, and yogurt. You think it's just because you are greedy, but in fact, this is all designed by the supermarket. hey-hey. :)

11, No real content/data is required when designing a website

Inaccurate.

Early designers were designing websites using placeholder "lorem ipsum", which made designers prioritize form over content. The content is the main purpose of users coming to the website.

Yoyo: Content first, form second. In recent years, there have been fewer and fewer examples of using placeholders to design products, and there have been more and more descriptions of real data in interface design.

12, user testing is expensive

Inaccurate.

There are many ways to conduct user testing. Drawing tests on paper and quick interviews with 5 people can all bring good design input.

Yoyo: User research is only beneficial if you do it yourself. In fact, it is not that difficult, expensive, or complicated.

13. If the product is easy to use, beauty is not important.

Inaccurate.

Users have emotions, and Midea’s products attract users.

Yoyo: "This is a society that values appearance..." Easy-to-use is basic, and good-looking is a must. To be knowledgeable and sensible, you also need to be as beautiful as a flower.

14, user experience is ease of use

Inaccurate.

The value of ease of use is to allow users to complete tasks easily, while user experience covers all experiences and feelings that a product gives users.

Yoyo: Explain these terms. User Experience, user experience, the largest, broadest and most complete; Interaction Design, interaction design; Visual Design/Graphic Design, visual design; User Research, user research; Animation Design, motion design; User Interface Design, interface design, feeling indistinguishable Interactive vision is mostly visual... Although each company has different names, the skills and categories have been unified in the industry.

15, leaving blank is a waste of space

Inaccurate.

White space is very important for interface rhythm control and visual design. White space is a visual element, not a simple background.

Yoyo: I have really met various product managers, mainly in the United States, who repeatedly argued with me about the preciousness of every position in the mobile interface, that it must be compressed and that white space must be reduced... You all know that in life, you must have Tension and relaxation, are you confused when it comes to interface design...

16, users are rational

Inaccurate.

Users are not completely rational, and there are many operations based on emotions and emotions.

Yoyo: People are not completely rational. I can't imagine this world if people were completely rational.

Inaccurate.

User experience design should be implemented throughout the entire project cycle.

Yoyo: If you still find that the product manager gives you requirements, you do it well, and then no one comes to you when you enter development, this design process is definitely incomplete, and you need to change this situation.

18, Internet product design success happens overnight

Not accurate.

Most successful Internet product designs are crafted carefully and take time.

Yoyo: One minute on stage, ten years off stage. We always see others at their most glorious, but we never think about the pain and tears behind others' success.

User experience is a very new industry, and people are paying more and more attention to it, but not everyone understands it thoroughly, so myths arise. I hope that the entire industry’s understanding of user experience will become clearer and clearer with the efforts of designers.

What myths have you discovered about user experience design? :)

Thanks for reading!

thanks, yoyo
