Laravel installation laravel elixir package is too large?

As mentioned.
A 250mb empty project and 200mb are all node_module files. .
Is there any way to lose weight? Or is there any alternative solution?
PS, during the installation process, I found that although gulp was installed globally, it had to be reinstalled in the project. I don’t understand. .
