How to destroy a programmer’s efficiency?
How to destroy a programmer’s efficiency:
Sometimes I can’t get anything done.
Of course, I walked into the office and wandered around, checking email every ten seconds, looking at the web, and even doing mindless things like paying my American Express bill. But I just won’t go back to the process of writing code.
The onset of such inefficiency usually lasts for a day or two. But there have been times in my career as a programmer where I couldn't do anything for weeks at a time. As they say, I'm distracted, I'm not in the best shape, I'm not in the best shape at all.
I have read this article five or six times, and I am still deeply shocked, because such an iconic figure in the programmer world would have such a rookie problem.
Fortunately, it’s not just me who has this problem.
I don’t have any tips for staying productive to share here, but I can tell you what makes me inefficient:
Open room layout
Programmers arguing about Django vs. .NET
Programmers arguing in general
Colleagues Come over and ask: "Hey, did you receive my email?"
The sound of chewing something. Obviously I have misophonia
I don’t understand the problem at hand
I doubt this project
I have multiple tasks to complete, they are all urgent
There are urgent things, nothing else Done
Mobile Weibo message notification sound
Email notification pop-up window
Any pop-up window
Instant messaging software
My wife asked: "Hey, can you take a minute to help me with something?"
build It’s a long time
Noise
People walking around the desk all the time
Company events
Wikipedia (I mean seriously, don’t click on any links)
Hacker News
Internet in general Affecting efficiency
These things made me work efficiently in the past:
Quiet environment
Quiet office (personal dedicated offices are too rare)
Understanding what I should do next in the project
Have a thorough understanding of the problem
No interruptions
I’m serious: No interruptions
Stay away from Weibo
Stay away from hacker news
No hardware issues
Love the project you are working on
Build and debug time is not long
Don’t argue about politics online
Obviously, half of the inefficiencies are self-inflicted, but some are not, like the open office layout.
Fundamentally, each of us has control over the factors that cause us to be ineffective. I will not fight peacefully. I either take a strong stance or I sit back and let others walk around me. I'm really bad at dealing with this. So, I have no good advice for dealing with external inefficiencies, but I do know this one: control what I can control. Meaning:
Turn off the prompt on my iPhone (another benefit is increased standby time)
Give myself a reward if I code for 3 hours in a row (usually in the form of "internet time", check out Hacker News or WeChat Bo)
Work from home only when you really have something to do
Invest in a cost-effective noise-cancelling headset
Schedule "no meetings" time on your calendar to show others that you are busy during these times and this is mine operating hours.
Don’t get involved in office programmer arguments; people have strong personal opinions, and programmers like to argue. If there is a real business problem that needs to be solved, let's go to the conference room and lay out the pros and cons of each approach. Let the data speak, don’t just argue.
Put your desk somewhere where it won’t be disturbed by passers-by.
Read the problem first, and then ask another programmer to explain it to me in detail, so that I can have a better understanding of the work to be done. This accomplishes two things: First, it allows me to grasp the situation so that I have at least a basic understanding of the gist of the job. Second, it allows me to ask smarter questions when asking for help.
