In the windows interface, use the disk manager to separate 40G of free space from the hard disk. Restart the computer, enter the BIOS, and change the startup mode to ACHI (if you want to use wireless wifi directly after the system is successfully installed, please turn off the security boot; otherwise, you can only use wired Internet connection by default!!). Exit the BIOS, insert the U disk with ubuntu 16.04 written on it, the computer automatically restarts, set to boot from the U disk, and the computer successfully enters the ubuntu trial version (I did not try to install it directly, but clicked on the trial version desktop installer.).

1. Prepare the ubuntu installation disk and reserve enough disk space on xps13

Preparing the installation disk is divided into Three steps: First, download the installation package of the required version of ubuntu (usually download the iso file); then, download the burning tool (the blogger uses ultraISO); finally, burn the contents of the installation package to a prepared USB flash drive. as the Ubuntu installation disk (note that it is best to have no other files in the U disk at this time, because the U disk will be formatted first during burning).

Next, we need to partition the xps13 and allocate space to ubuntu. Note here that if you use the system tool that comes with win10 on xps13 to compress the disk, you must leave at least 70GB of disk space for win10. If you compress the disk when the available disk space is less than 70GB, win10 will return the parameters. error, and notified that partitioning cannot be performed. However, when the blogger tried to partition using system tools after setting aside 70GB, he found that the compressible capacity was only 5GB. In other words, under this method, the available disk space for Ubuntu was only 5GB. This is obviously is unacceptable. Here, the blogger recommends using Partition Assistant, which can successfully solve the disk partition problem of xps13. The entire process of using the Partition Assistant takes about 1 hour. Now set the partition plan on the Partition Assistant, and then restart xps13, the Partition Assistant will start partitioning, and will not re-enter the win10 graphical interface after partitioning. The blogger set aside 110GB for linux. (The total available disk space is about 225GB)

2. Change the hard disk mode of xps13

Dell xps13 has three hard disk modes: RAID (Default) mode; ACHI mode; and mixed modes of the above two. We cannot install Ubuntu in RAID mode, so when booting the Dell icon, press F2 to enter the BIOS options and change the hard disk mode from RAID to ACHI. When changing, the system will remind you that the change may cause irreversible problems. In fact, That's okay, confirm the changes. Note that you cannot enter win10 after changing the hard disk mode, so you can plug the Ubuntu installation disk we prepared into the USB interface at this time. When the system restarts and enters the dell icon interface, press F12 to enter the boot interface and select the U disk. Start it, enter the ubuntu installation interface and install it normally. Regarding the partitions when installing Ubuntu, I referred to online tutorials and used the following partitions:

##/tmp/home ext4

At this step, Ubuntu on xps13 has been installed, but after entering the Ubuntu graphical interface, we found a very important problem: there is no wifi driver, so we cannot connect to wifi!

The blogger has tried many methods on the Internet, and the summary is as follows:

A. For installing ubuntu14.04 LTS on xps13, it is temporarily unavailable. To be able to solve the problem of wifi driver;

 B. For installing ubuntu16.04 LTS on xps13, the problem can be solved; in addition to the common wifi driver installation method on the Internet, the blogger uses The following method:

Download and install a driver firmware: Download the installation package

Use a USB flash drive to copy the firmware to Ubuntu

   In the terminal, enter sudo dpkg -i linux-firmware_1.157.5_all.deb and press Enter

                                           Generation ′.

At this point, the core process of installing and configuring Ubuntu on Dell xps13 is over. As for the installation of some other drivers, most online tutorials are feasible, so I won’t mention them here. .
