SFC or System File Checker is one of the Windows maintenance utilities that comes by default on all Windows operating system versions. It is designed to scan your Windows system thoroughly, find damaged/damaged/missing system files, and repair them automatically.
In order to run sfc /scannow (aka sfc.exe), the user must access an elevated command prompt and run commands on it. However, during or after this process, you may receive a prompt that the sfc scan failed and notify the user that "Windows Resource Protection cannot perform the requested operation." First of all, this notification informs sfc that it has detected some problems related to system files, but it cannot repair them. Secondly, it points to the fact that the SFC utility is also malfunctioning. Microsoft hasn't acknowledged this bug yet because it's not very common and only appears on random occasions.
Note: The following method is suitable for all windows operating systems, but the method of opening cmd is different.
How to fix SFC "Windows Resource Protection cannot perform the requested operation" error?
Solution 1. Start CHKDSK
Click Start, select Run, enter cmd and choose to run the command line window as administrator.
If you are asked to enter your administrator password, please make sure you enter it correctly.
Type CHKDSK C:/R in the Command Prompt window and press Enter.
After that, enter y and press Enter again.
Restart your computer and wait for the CHKDSK scan to complete.
If you can run the SFC scan afterwards, it means the problem has been fixed.
Solution 2. Change the security descriptor
If the SFC scan fails due to inability to access the winsxs folder, you should manually modify the security descriptor of this folder. This can be accomplished by performing the following steps:
Click Start Select Run Enter cmd and select Run as Administrator in the command line window.
If a confirmation window appears and asks for the administrator password, make sure you enter it correctly.
Type ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs in the Command Prompt window and press Enter.
After that, close the command prompt window and restart your PC.
