The most commonly used fields are Page field (inserted when adding page numbers) and Date field (insert when clicking "Insert" menu and the Automatically Update checkbox is selected).
Fields are automatically inserted when you create an index and table of contents using the Index and Table of Contents command on the Insert menu. You can also use fields to automatically insert document information such as author or file name, perform calculations, link or cross-reference other documents or projects, perform other specified tasks, etc.
Field codes are located in curly brackets ({ }). To show the results of field codes (such as calculated results) and hide the field codes: click the Options command on the Tools menu, click the View tab, and then clear the Field Codes check box . Fields are somewhat similar to formulas in Microsoft Excel; specifically, the field code is similar to the formula and the field result is similar to the value calculated by the formula.
It is not possible to insert field braces simply by typing characters on the keyboard. Fields are inserted by using specific commands such as Date and Time on the Insert menu or by pressing Ctrl F9 and typing the appropriate information between the field's curly braces.
