et200m is the interface module. ET200M is used in medium and large distributed control situations. It uses the signal/function module of S7-300 and also supports Profibus-DP and Profinet buses. Its interface module is IM153-1/2/4.

The operating environment of this tutorial: Windows 7 system, Dell G3 computer.

Siemens ET200M interface module.

Distributed systems are widely used in today’s industrial control field. By connecting on-site sensors/actuators to distributed modules (IO), and then communicating with the controller (CPU) through the bus, It can realize fast data exchange and facilitate the centralized management of scattered components on site. Siemens' distributed systems include ET200S, ET200SP, ET200M, ET200MP, ET200pro, etc. ET200S is mainly used in relatively small automation situations and supports Profibus-DP and Profinet buses. Its interface modules are IM151-1 (Profibus-DP) and IM151-3 (Profinet); ET200M is used in medium and large distributed control situations. The signal/function module of S7-300 also supports Profibus-DP and Profinet bus, and its interface module is IM153-1/2/4 (four types in total).

ET200M’s interface module IM153 has four models: IM153-1 standad, IM153-2 HF, IM153-4 PN and IM153-4 PN HF.

IM 153-1 Standard (standard type) has a 9-pin SUB-D interface for Profibus-DP bus connection. The maximum supported transmission rate is 12 Mb/s. IM 153-1 Standard supports up to 8 distributed signal modules (FM352-5, FM353-1, FM354-1 are not supported), and the size of the output/output buffer is 128 bytes respectively.

IM 153-2 HF (High Performance) also has a 9-pin SUB-D interface, supports Profibus-DP bus, and has a maximum transmission rate of 12 Mb/s. IM 153-2 HF supports up to 12 distributed signal modules (all S7-300 signal modules can be used), and the size of the output/output buffer is 244 bytes respectively. The IM 153-2 HF also supports fail-safe systems (F-system) and redundancy systems (Redudancy). Using IM 153-2 HF to create a redundant system requires the use of a dedicated backplane module (BM), as shown below:

IM 153-4 PN and IM 153-4 PN HF (High Performance) modules connect the distributed modules of the ET200M to the Profinet network Medium (PN in the name means Profinet), supports full-duplex, 10/100M network, automatic negotiation of transmission rate; the maximum number of supported S7-300 signal modules is 12; there is a slot for MMC cards on the module, which can be inserted MMC card to save network configuration data, but normal operation will not be affected if the card is not inserted. The high-performance module (IM 153-4 PN HF) supports the Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP) and can automatically select another transmission path when a failure occurs.
