The so-called HTML-formatted email refers to a type of email that looks like a web page. It contains HTML (hypertext) links. Clicking on the link can go to other pages and can include pictures, sounds, etc. Compared with ordinary text emails, emails in HTML format can make the email content more colorful. In addition to text, there can also be links to sounds and images, etc.

Most email users support HTML email and even default to it. Many users also include a GUI (graphical user interface) editor to facilitate users to build HTML emails. According to a survey by an online market company, users using HTML emails are now very common, and many users also like to receive HTML emails through plain text.

Compatibility

The email software compliance regulations are based on RFC 2822, which only supports plain text, not formatted HTML. Sending an email in HTML format may therefore render it incompatible with the recipient user. The worst situation is that the recipient can only see the HTML code instead of the desired message.

If those email clients that support HTML are not given unified specifications, many HTML emails will be incompatible and may even cause errors, especially for Gmail users.

Message size

HTML emails are larger than plain text. Even if no special formatting is used, tags used in HTML documents have an overhead that can be much higher if formatting is overused. Multi-part messages, as copies of the same content but in different formats, further increase the size of the email.

In the 1990s, most users accessed email through server modems. The Internet speed was extremely slow, and the difference in download time between plain text and mixed emails could reach ten or even more than ten times. But for most people today, this difference pales in comparison to images, music files, or other common attachments.
