Does centos6.5 support uefi?

The operating environment of this article: centos 6.5 system, Dell G3 computer.

Does centos6.5 support uefi

CentOS also supports booting in both BIOS and UEFI, so there are two installation methods.

UEFI modern installation method

(1) Set BIOS: disable CSM, disable secure boot;

(2) Use Diskgen or similar tools to install The hard disk format is GPT format (more than 4 primary partitions can be created);

(3) Download CentOS-6.3-x86_64-minimal-EFI.iso from the official website and burn it to a CD;

(4) Start from the CD and install the system. During the installation, you will be prompted that an ESP partition must be created and hung in /boot/efi. Other operations are the same as traditional installation.

Things to note:

After the installation is completed, /EFI/redflag/grub.efi in the ESP partition is started by default. After the system starts, you can use the efiboogmgr command to view and modify the UEFI boot menu, but my own experiments have proven that the modification does not take effect. There is another way to change the startup file, which is to rename grub.efi so that UEFI cannot find this file. When the startup menu items are invalid, /EFI/boot/bootx64.efi will automatically start. This is just a conventional file name, you can rename any startup file you want to this. What I did was to rename rEFInd.efi to bootx64.efi so that refind can be started by default. The bootmanger rEFInd can automatically scan all .efi files in the FAT32 partition and list them in the graphical interface for the user to choose to start.

CentOS startup process after installation in this way:

Startup process: BIOS------grub.efi program in the ESP partition of the hard disk-------load and start CentOS.

Note: This method provides a special partition for the boot loader GRUB, which makes grub's survival very comfortable, the volume can be large, and there is no need to divide it into multiple parts. This is grub.efi .

Extended knowledge: Traditional BIOS installation method

(1) Set BIOS: Enable CSM, disable secure boot;

(2)Use Diskgen Or similar tools to reformat the hard disk into MBR format;

(3) Download CentOS-6.4-x86_64-minimal.iso from the official website and burn it to a CD;

(4) Boot from the CD , the installation is completed step by step.

After the installation is completed in this way, the startup process of CentOS:

Startup process: BIOS ---- hard disk MBR (installed with grub part) ---------- Other parts of grub (may be located in the first few sectors of a partition) ------- load and start CentOS.

Note: In fact, it is more difficult for other parts of grub to survive here. It must find enough sectors to store itself, and it cannot be duplicated with the sectors used by the file system (because the first part of grub has very little code, The file system cannot be recognized and can only rely on physical sectors to find other parts. The physical sectors occupied by files in the file system may change, so the remaining parts of grub cannot use the file system to store themselves), so survival is difficult! ! !

Choice of installation method

Installing CentOS using the traditional BIOS MBR method or the UEFI GPT method depends on the usage environment. If the hard disk is larger than 2TB, you need to use UEFI GPT. From the perspective of technological development, UEFI GPT is a trend. If the motherboard and OS support it, then try to use UEFI GPT to install the OS!
