Mar 31, 2023 am 09:09 AM

Branching in GitLab is a very important thing because it allows developers to develop and build applications in parallel. In this article, we will explain in detail how to use GitLab for branching operations.

  1. Create a new branch

First, open your GitLab repository. In the warehouse home page, you can see the " " icon. Click on it and select the "New branch" option. In the window that pops up, enter the name of the new branch you want to create. You can also choose to make the new branch the default branch (i.e. the master branch).

  1. Switch branch

Switching branch refers to changing the current branch to another branch. You can switch branches in GitLab in two ways. The first method is to use a branch switcher. On the right side of your repository home page, find the branch switcher. In the drop-down menu, select the branch you want to switch to. The second method is to switch branches through the command line. Taking the "master" branch as an example, you can use the following command to switch to this branch:

$ git checkout master
Copy after login

Please note that executing this command will delete all changes made on your current branch. Therefore, make sure to commit all changes to the current branch before switching branches.

  1. Merge branch

Merge branch refers to merging the changes made in another branch into the current branch. Merging branches is very easy in GitLab. First, switch to the target branch you want to merge. Then, click the Merge request button. In the pop-up window, select the source branch to merge. Once completed, please submit a merge request.

  1. Delete Branches

You can delete certain branches if you no longer need them. In GitLab, you can delete a branch in two ways. The first method is to use a branch switcher. On the right side of your repository home page, find the branch switcher. In the drop-down menu, select the branch you want to delete. Click the "Delete" button to delete the branch. The second method is to delete via the command line. Taking the "branch1" branch as an example, you can use the following command to delete the branch:

$ git branch -d branch1
Copy after login

Please note that executing this command will permanently delete the branch. So make sure you really need to delete that branch.
