How to configure Git for SSH

Apr 03, 2023 am 09:19 AM

When using Git for version control, SSH is used to securely connect to servers and repositories. If you want to use SSH to connect to the repository and perform push and pull operations, you need to configure SSH first.

Here are the steps to configure Git for SSH:

1. Generate SSH key

To connect to a Git repository using SSH, you need to generate an SSH key and Add to your Git account.

To generate an SSH key, open a terminal and enter the following command:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 -C "your_email@example.com"
Copy after login

This command will generate an SSH key pair, including a public key (id_rsa.pub) and a private key (id_rsa). Please note that your_email@example.com should be replaced with your own email address in the above command.

After pressing the Enter key, you will be asked to enter the file name and password. If you don't want to set a password for your key, you can just press Enter to skip it.

2. Add the public key to your Git account

Before you use SSH to connect to the Git repository, you need to add the public key to your Git account. In this way, Git will recognize your SSH key and authorize you to perform push and pull operations.

To add a public key to your Git account, first copy the public key. Open a terminal and enter the following command:

cat ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub
Copy after login

This command will display your public key. Please copy everything to your Git account. Open your Git account and select "Settings" > "SSH and GPG keys" > "New SSH key" in the upper right corner of the page.

Enter a descriptive name (such as "Own Key") in the "Title" field and copy your public key into the "Key" field. Click the "Add SSH key" button and your public key will be added to your Git account.

3. Connect to the Git repository using SSH

Now that you have generated the SSH key and added the public key to your Git account, you can connect to the Git repository using SSH And perform push and pull operations.

To connect to a Git repository using SSH, first obtain the SSH URL of the repository. In your Git repository page, click the "Clone or download" button and make sure the "Clone with SSH" option is selected. You will see the SSH URL for the repository, which you can copy to your clipboard.

Open a terminal, go into the directory where you store your code and enter the following command:

git remote set-url origin git@github.com:yourusername/yourrepository.git
Copy after login

The above command will associate the repository where you store your code with the SSH URL so you can use SSH Connect to this repository.

Now you can use SSH to connect to the repository and perform push and pull operations. For example, to push your code to a Git repository, use the following command:

git push -u origin master
Copy after login

The above command will push your code to the Git repository and associate it with the "master" branch. When pushing for the first time, please use the -u option to associate your local master branch with the remote master branch in future push operations.

Conclusion

When using Git, SSH is a very useful tool that helps you connect to servers and repositories securely. By following the configuration steps above, you can easily use SSH to connect to your Git repository and perform push and pull operations.
