Laravel is a popular PHP framework that provides various tools and features that make developing web applications fast and easy. One useful application is an online chat room. In this article, we will explain how to create a simple chat room using Laravel.

Environment setup

Before you start, please make sure that your computer has PHP, Laravel, Composer, and a web server installed. If you don't have these software yet, you will need to install them first. How to install Laravel and Composer can be found in the official documentation.

Create project

First, we need to create a Laravel project. Open a terminal and create a new directory in it, then create a new project with the following command:

laravel new chatroom
Copy after login

This will create a new Laravel project called chatroom. Now, go into that directory and run the following command:

php artisan serve
Copy after login

This command will start the built-in web server and serve it on port 8000 on localhost.

Create model and database

Before we start writing code, we need to create a database table to store chat records. To do this we need to create a model and migration.

Run the following command to create the model and migration:

php artisan make:model Message -m
Copy after login

The above command will create a model named Message and a migration named create_messages_table. Create the data table by editing the migration file. In the migration file we need to define the structure of the message. Here is an example:

public function up()
{
    Schema::create('messages', function (Blueprint $table) {
        $table->id();
        $table->string('author');
        $table->string('message');
        $table->timestamps();
    });
}
Copy after login

This migration creates a message table with id, author, message, and timestamps fields. Next, run the following command to run the migration:

php artisan migrate
Copy after login

Create controller and view

We need to create the controller and view for the chat room. Laravel comes with a very powerful Blade template engine that can easily create beautiful web pages. To do this we need to create a controller and some views.

Run the following command to create a controller:

php artisan make:controller ChatController
Copy after login

This will create a controller named ChatController. Next, edit the controller to add code to handle the logic for the chat room page. Here is a basic example:

namespace App\Http\Controllers;

use Illuminate\Http\Request;
use App\Models\Message;

class ChatController extends Controller
{
    public function index()
    {
        return view('chat.index');
    }

    public function store(Request $request)
    {
        $message = new Message();
        $message->author = $request->input('author');
        $message->message = $request->input('message');
        $message->save();

        return response()->json(['status' => 'success']);
    }

    public function messages()
    {
        $messages = Message::all();

        return response()->json($messages);
    }
}
Copy after login

This controller has three methods. The first method index() is used to return the view of the chat room page. The second method store() is used to save the message to the database. The third method messages() is used to return the JSON response of all messages.

Next, we need to create the view. Create a new directory chat in the resources/views directory and create a file named index.blade.php in it. In this file we need to add a form to allow users to send messages, as well as display all messages below. Here is an example:

@extends('layouts.master')

@section('content')
    <div class="card">
        <div class="card-header">Chat Room</div>

        <div class="card-body">
            <form id="chat-form">
                <div class="form-group">
                    <label for="author">Name:</label>
                    <input type="text" id="author" name="author" class="form-control" required>
                </div>

                <div class="form-group">
                    <label for="message">Message:</label>
                    <textarea id="message" name="message" rows="5" class="form-control" required></textarea>
                </div>

                <button type="submit" class="btn btn-primary">Send</button>
            </form>

            <hr>

            <ul id="messages">

            </ul>
        </div>
    </div>

    <script>
        // 使用 jQuery 来处理表单提交事件
        $('#chat-form').submit(function (event) {
            event.preventDefault();

            $.post('/messages', $(this).serialize(), function (data) {
                console.log(data);

                if (data.status === 'success') {
                    $('#chat-form')[0].reset();
                }
            });
        });

        // 从服务器获取消息并添加到列表中
        function getMessagesFromServer() {
            $.get('/messages', function (data) {
                var html = '';

                $.each(data, function (index, message) {
                    html += '<li><strong>' + message.author + '</strong>: ' + message.message + '</li>';
                });

                $('#messages').html(html);
            });
        }

        // 每隔一秒钟从服务器获取消息
        setInterval(function () {
            getMessagesFromServer();
        }, 1000);
    </script>
@endsection
Copy after login

The view consists of two parts: the form and the message list. The form allows users to enter their name and a message to send. The message list displays all previously sent messages to the chat room.

Complete

Now we have successfully created a basic chat room application that includes a database table that can save messages, a view that can display all messages, and a Controller method that accepts new messages and saves them to the database. Now, we only need to access http://localhost:8000/chat in a web browser to enter our chat room.
