As a PHP developer, modifying the php.ini configuration file is also an essential skill. This article will introduce you how to modify the php.ini configuration file under macOS system.

1. Open the terminal

Under macOS system, we need to open the terminal first. Find the application folder in Finder, find the "Utilities" folder in the folder, and double-click to open the terminal.

2. Find the php.ini file

Enter the following command in the terminal:

sudo nano /etc/php.ini

This command allows us to Open the php.ini file with administrator rights, enter the password, and press Enter to open it.

3. Modify configuration parameters

We can use the shortcut key Ctrl W to search for the configuration parameters we need to modify. For example, if we need to change the size limit of uploaded files from the default 2MB to 10MB, we can search for "upload_max_filesize", find this parameter and modify it to "10M".

In addition, you can also modify the following commonly used configuration parameters:

  1. memory_limit: the maximum value of memory occupied by a PHP script, in bytes.
  2. post_max_size: The maximum number of bytes for POST requests, in bytes.
  3. max_execution_time: The longest running time of the PHP script, in seconds.
  4. display_errors: Whether to display runtime error information.
  5. error_reporting: What types of errors are reported.

4. Save modifications

After modifying the configuration parameters, press the shortcut key Ctrl O to save the changes, and then press the shortcut key Ctrl X to exit the nano editor.

5. Restart Apache or PHP-FPM

Restart Apache or PHP-FPM to make the new configuration take effect. Enter the following command in the terminal:

sudo apachectl restart

or

sudo brew services restart php@version number

where the version number is the one you installed PHP version number.
