How to write MySQL applications using Golang

Apr 05, 2023 pm 01:48 PM

Golang is an efficient, fast and flexible programming language. Its built-in concurrency support and garbage collector make it very suitable for handling high-load environments. At the same time, MySQL is an open source relational database that is widely used in web applications. In this article, we will learn how to write MySQL applications using Golang.

Step 1: Install and set up the MySQL database

First, you need to install and set up the MySQL database. MySQL can be downloaded and installed from the following link:

https://www.mysql.com/downloads/
Copy after login

Once the installation is complete, you will also need to create a database and a user. Open the MySQL console and run the following command:

$ mysql -u root -p
Copy after login

This will prompt you for your password in the console. Enter your password and press Enter. Now, you can create a new database and a new user for use in the application:

mysql> CREATE DATABASE mydatabase;
mysql> CREATE USER 'myuser'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'mypassword';
mysql> GRANT ALL ON mydatabase.* TO 'myuser'@'localhost';
mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
Copy after login

Next, install the Golang MySQL library for connecting to the MySQL database.

Step 2: Install the Golang MySQL library

In Go, there are many MySQL libraries available, but the most popular is the go-sql-driver/mysql library.

Install the library using the following command:

$ go get -u github.com/go-sql-driver/mysql
Copy after login

Step 3: Write a Golang application

In this example, we will write an application that uses Golang to connect and query the MySQL database Simple application. Please follow the steps below.

  1. Import required libraries:

    import (

     "database/sql"
     "fmt"
     _ "github.com/go-sql-driver/mysql"
    Copy after login
    Copy after login

    )

  2. Connect to the database:

    db, err := sql.Open("mysql", "myuser:mypassword@tcp(127.0.0.1:3306)/mydatabase")
    if err != nil {

     panic(err.Error())
    Copy after login
    Copy after login

    }
    defer db.Close()

  3. Execute query:

    rows, err := db.Query("SELECT * FROM mytable")
    if err != nil {

     panic(err.Error())
    Copy after login
    Copy after login

    }

  4. Iterate over the results and print:

    for rows.Next() {

     var id int
     var name string
     err := rows.Scan(&id, &name)
     if err != nil {
         panic(err.Error())
     }
     fmt.Println(id, name)
    Copy after login

    }

  5. ##The complete code is as follows:

    package main

    import (

     "database/sql"
     "fmt"
     _ "github.com/go-sql-driver/mysql"
    Copy after login
    Copy after login
    )

    func main() {

     db, err := sql.Open("mysql", "myuser:mypassword@tcp(127.0.0.1:3306)/mydatabase")
     if err != nil {
         panic(err.Error())
     }
     defer db.Close()

     rows, err := db.Query("SELECT * FROM mytable")
     if err != nil {
         panic(err.Error())
     }

     for rows.Next() {
         var id int
         var name string
         err := rows.Scan(&id, &name)
         if err != nil {
             panic(err.Error())
         }
         fmt.Println(id, name)
     }
    Copy after login
    }

  6. Save the code and run the application:

    $ go run main.go

The output should contain the id and name retrieved from the MySQL database.

Summary: Combination of Golang and MySQL

In this article, we learned how to use Golang to connect and query the MySQL database. We installed a MySQL database instance and created a new user and a new database. We also introduced the go-sql-driver/mysql library, a popular Go library for connecting to and querying MySQL databases. Finally, we learned how to write a MySQL application using Golang and output the results in the console. This is a simple but common use case that demonstrates that Golang can be used to work with MySQL databases and illustrates that developers can use Golang's native features to write efficient database applications.
