Google has denied the accusations.
Google has been accused of using data from OpenAI’s ChatGPT without authorization to train its AI chatbot Bard. According to The Information, Google AI researcher Jacob Devlin resigned because the company scraped ChatGPT data from a website called ShareGPT.
“Devlin resigned after sharing concerns with Pichai, Dean and other senior executives about the Bard team, which, with help from Brain employees, is using data from data from OpenAI’s ChatGPT to train its machine learning models,” the report said. Devlin has since joined OpenAI to work on ChatGPT.
OpenAI and Google compete directly in the field of generative artificial intelligence. Microsoft's heavy investment in OpenAI and its rapid success integrating GPT into its products has Google scrambling to bring its own AI chatbot, Bard, to market. Accusations that Google unblocked ChatGPT data could damage the company's reputation, given that it has been promoting AI research for years.
Unrelated to the report, Android Authority was recently contacted by an SEO agency called Loopex Digital, who claimed it had spoken with Bard, in which the AI assistant said it was based on OpenAI GPT-3 language model. However, in a later exchange, Bader changed his tune and claimed to be based on Google AI’s LaMDA model. For all we know, this could be a case of Bard giving incorrect information, a common flaw in generative AI models. However, the opposite suggests there is some truth to the latest accusation.
