How to divide two numbers in PHP (a brief analysis of built-in functions)

Apr 10, 2023 am 09:42 AM

PHP is a feature-rich programming language widely used for web development, especially server-side development. In PHP, there are many built-in functions that can help us implement various operations, including basic mathematical operations. This article will introduce the function in PHP to divide two numbers.

In PHP, division operations are represented by slashes (/). For example, 12/3 means 12 divided by 3. However, in some cases we may need to divide two numbers and get an exact result rather than a simple approximation. At this time, using PHP's built-in division operation may not meet our needs.

In this case, we can use some functions provided by PHP to perform exact division operations. The following are the main two functions:

1. bcdiv()

The bcdiv() function is a function in PHP that performs arbitrary precision division operations. It can return the exact result represented by a string. This function can accept three parameters, the first two parameters specify the two numbers to be divided, and the third parameter is the number of decimal places to be retained.

For example, to divide 9 by 4 and keep the result to two decimal places, you can use the following code:

$result = bcdiv(9, 4, 2);
echo $result; // 输出2.25
Copy after login

2. gmp_div_q()

gmp_div_q() function is A function in PHP that performs division of large numbers. It provides higher operating speed and smaller memory footprint, but can only handle integer values. This function can accept two parameters, the first parameter specifies the two numbers for division, and the second parameter is an integer used to specify the type of division.

For example, to divide 2^64 by 13 and get the quotient, you can use the following code:

$result = gmp_div_q(gmp_init('18446744073709551616'), 13);
echo gmp_strval($result); // 输出1418980313362273
Copy after login

It should be noted that before using the gmp_div_q() function, you need to call gmp_init( ) function to convert the numerical value to be calculated into a GMP (GNU Multiple Precision Arithmetic Library) object.

The above are the two functions in PHP that implement the division of two numbers. Their application ranges are different, so you need to choose based on actual needs when using them. If you need to perform precise division on small values, you can choose to use the bcdiv() function, and if you need to perform division on large integer values, you can choose to use the gmp_div_q() function.
