How to set up a proxy for Docker connections

Apr 10, 2023 pm 02:19 PM

Docker is a popular containerization platform that allows applications to run in isolation at the operating system level, providing greater portability and reliability. However, in some cases, due to network environment and other reasons, it is necessary to set a proxy for Docker connections to ensure normal operation. This article explains how to set up a proxy for Docker connections.

  1. Set Docker daemon agent

Docker daemon is the core component of Docker, which is responsible for managing the life cycle of resources such as containers and images. To set a proxy for the Docker daemon, you need to edit the Docker configuration file /etc/docker/daemon.json and add the httpProxy and httpsProxy fields:

{
  "proxies": {
    "default": {
      "httpProxy": "http://proxy.hostname:port",
      "httpsProxy": "http://proxy.hostname:port"
    }
  }
}
Copy after login

Among them, httpProxy is the HTTP proxy address, and httpsProxy is the HTTPS proxy address. If the proxy requires authentication, you can add the proxyUsername and proxyPassword fields.

After the editing is completed, restart the Docker daemon to take effect:

$ sudo systemctl restart docker
Copy after login
  1. Set the Docker client agent

In addition to the Docker daemon, you also need to set up the Docker client acting. On Linux and macOS systems, you can set the proxy through environment variables:

$ export HTTP_PROXY=http://proxy.hostname:port
$ export HTTPS_PROXY=http://proxy.hostname:port
Copy after login

On Windows systems, you can add the proxy in the Docker Desktop settings:

  1. Right-click the Docker Desktop icon , select Settings.
  2. Click on the Proxy panel.
  3. Turn on the Use the same proxy server for both HTTP and HTTPS protocols option and fill in the proxy address and port number.
  4. Click the Apply & Restart button to make the settings take effect.
  5. Set up the proxy using Docker Compose

Docker Compose is another important component of Docker, which allows users to define the relationship and configuration of multiple Docker containers through YAML files. Similarly, to set up a proxy for Docker Compose, you need to add environment variables in the configuration file:

services:
  my-service:
    environment:
      - HTTP_PROXY=http://proxy.hostname:port
      - HTTPS_PROXY=http://proxy.hostname:port
Copy after login

In the above example, my-service is a Docker container, which will be retrieved from the environment variables Read the proxy address and port number.

  1. Conclusion

Setting up a proxy for Docker connections ensures that your application runs properly in a restricted network environment. Whether it is Docker daemon, Docker client, or Docker Compose, proxy settings can be achieved through simple configuration. When setting up a proxy, you need to pay attention to the correctness of the proxy address and port number, and whether the proxy requires authentication.

Docker is a must-have skill for DevOps engineers. 1.Docker is an open source containerized platform that achieves isolation and portability by packaging applications and their dependencies into containers. 2. Docker works with namespaces, control groups and federated file systems. 3. Basic usage includes creating, running and managing containers. 4. Advanced usage includes using DockerCompose to manage multi-container applications. 5. Common errors include container failure, port mapping problems, and data persistence problems. Debugging skills include viewing logs, entering containers, and viewing detailed information. 6. Performance optimization and best practices include image optimization, resource constraints, network optimization and best practices for using Dockerfile.
