Based on AIGC technology, South Korean telecom giant launches AI chatbot

According to foreign media reports, SK Telecom, South Korea’s largest mobile communications operator, is planning to fully launch its own artificial intelligence chatbot , but an executive on the project said the company is working on a product that is completely different from ChatGPT.

SKT has launched a beta version of its artificial intelligence "A." in May 2022, which is based on the same generative artificial intelligence (AIGC) technology as ChatGPT.

Eric Davis, the vice president of SKT who is responsible for the development of "A.", said that the company will launch a full version in South Korea this year 2023, adding that this proposition is very different from ChatGPT.

Davis said SKT has been studying A.'s application for a year and a half. A. Based on a large language model, it can chat in natural language. It's the same technology behind ChatGPT.

But Davis is keen to position "A." as a distinct product from ChatGPT. This is because SKT also has a variety of services, from music streaming to e-commerce and payment applications, which it is integrating into chatbots.

So, to a large extent, super apps are the end result. Download our app and we'll do basically anything you want us to do and more. " said Davis.

Super apps are popular in parts of Asia but have yet to catch on in Europe and the United States.

Davis, who previously worked for Apple's voice assistant Siri, said their plans is to integrate “more third-party services into the “A.” chatbot.

A. Currently there is only Korean version. Davis said SKT is in the early stages of exploring an international rollout of the service.

“We have been talking to local people in Europe and certainly in Southeast Asia, they know the market and know what will sell. So we have been negotiating, but still nothing has been finalized.”

SKT has been seeking to diversify beyond its core telecom business. The company plans to launch a flying taxi service in 2025, and according to media reports, its artificial intelligence chip spin-off Sapeon is seeking a valuation of $400 million.
