Apple releases iOS 15.4.1 update to fix battery drain issue it claims is normal

Apple has released a small update for iPhone and iPad devices. iOS 15.4.1 includes some bug fixes. However, Apple is also trying to address the excessive battery drain issues some iPhone users are experiencing after installing iOS 15.4.

iPhone and iPad users have a new minor update to the iOS and iPadOS operating systems. This update does not contain any new features, only bug fixes. Apple notes that this update fixes the following issues:

  • Braille devices may become unresponsive when browsing text or displaying alerts
  • Made for iPhone Heading devices may become unresponsive when browsing text or displaying alerts Loss of connection in some third-party apps

The size of the update may vary slightly, but some iPhone users say it's around 300MB in size. While the above bug fixes are welcome, Apple has also fixed a battery drain issue that some users reported after releasing iOS 15.4 earlier this month.

Apple's official Twitter account, Apple Support, claims that the battery drain experienced by users after software updates is "normal." The tweet mentioned that apps and features will need to be "adjusted" for 48 hours after the update.

Apple made it clear that the update fixes an issue where "battery may drain faster than expected after updating to iOS 15.4." While system features and apps need "stabilization" time after a major update, iOS 15.4.1 contradicts Apple's own claims. Today's release notes for iOS 15.4.1 confirm that battery drain is completely abnormal.

The iOS 15.4.1 and iPadOS 15.4.1 updates are available on all eligible devices through Over-the-Air (OTA) updates in the Settings app. To get the update, go to Settings>General>Software Update.

In addition to the above issues, the latest update also fixes an AppleAVD issue that could allow an application to "execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges." Apple says exploits based on this vulnerability may exist in the wild. Therefore, iPhone and iPad users are highly recommended to update their devices as soon as possible.
