Windows 11 has been rolled out to customers around the world and has received various interesting updates since its launch. For example, Windows 11 version 22H2 (the first major update to the operating system) adds tabs to File Explorer, enables drag-and-drop support for the taskbar, and more.

After adding tabs to File Explorer, it seems Microsoft is planning to bring tabs to the Notes app. This isn't the first time Microsoft has tried adding tabs to apps like Notepad. In 2017, Microsoft experimented with a feature called "Sets" that added tabs for different apps, eliminating the need to open multiple windows of the same app.

Windows 10’s tab idea is to group windows into a single tabbed window, allowing you to have multiple instances of Notepad and other applications in a single window. According to sources, the feature was officially shelved in 2019 due to technical issues encountered within Microsoft.

Microsoft now appears to be bringing “tab” support to the Notes app, according to screenshots posted by Microsoft engineers. This feature appears to be in the early stages of development, and there is a warning in the app about a nondisclosure agreement not to discuss or share the feature with the public.

It's great to see tab support extending beyond File Explorer and appearing in popular apps like Notepad. This may not sound like a big deal to many users, but being able to organize multiple instances of Notepad using tabs rather than relying on separate windows would be more efficient.

It’s also worth noting that tab support will help improve performance. For example, File Explorer's tabs use much less RAM. In our tests, we observed that the new tab only increased memory consumption by a few megabytes.

Of course, this is subjective and all configurations will differ, but tab integration will definitely reduce memory consumption.
