Windows Insiders can test build 23419 and its relatively modest list of features and changes. However, there's more new stuff hidden "behind the scenes," which requires modifications to the ViveTool app or the Windows registry. One of those features is a new shortcut for the screen recording feature.

As spotted by @PhantomOfEarth (Twitter), Microsoft is testing a new key sequence or shortcut for screen recording using the Snipping Tool app. You can call the application to take a screenshot using Win Shift R, and the new shortcut will let you record the screen using Win Shift R.

Like other hidden features in earlier Windows versions, the new shortcuts are half-baked and don't work as expected. Enabling Feature ID opens Win Shift R, but it doesn't start a new recording - it brings up the standard screenshot interface. If you want to try it yourself, here's how to enable shortcuts.

Note: Unannounced features are often primitive, unstable, or marginally unavailable. Therefore, you should back up your important data before trying out the ViveTool app.

How to enable the new screen recording shortcut in Windows 11 build 23419?

  1. Download ViveTool from GitHub and extract the files into a convenient and easy-to-find folder.
  2. Press Win X and select Terminal (Admin).
  3. Switch the Windows Terminal to the Command Prompt profile using the Ctrl Shift 2 shortcut or click the down arrow button at the top of the window. Windows 11 may soon get a dedicated screen recording shortcut
  4. Use the CD command to navigate to the folder containing the ViveTool files. For example, if you have placed the ViveTool in C:\Vive, type CD C:\Vive.
  5. Type vivetool /enable /id:42063280 and press Enter key.
  6. Restart your computer.

In case you missed it, researchers recently discovered a flaw in the Snipping Tool app that allows the recovery of deleted screenshots. Therefore, you may want to patch the vulnerability at Microsoft.
