Windows 11 update rolled back due to Start menu opening issue

KB5014668 is the latest optional update for the operating system. Optional updates are released as previews, or beta updates as some call them, that will be integrated into the cumulative updates Microsoft releases on the second Tuesday of next month.

Tip: Read here why optional updates or optional driver updates should not be installed on Windows 11 devices (with some exceptions).

Optional Updates are a preview of the non-security portion of upcoming cumulative updates for the Windows operating system. Administrators use them for functional testing. Optional updates should not be installed unless they fix a critical issue in Windows that users are experiencing on their devices.

Microsoft confirmed the Start menu issue on July 22, 2022.

After installing the KB5014668 or later update, we have received reports that a small number of devices may be unable to open the Start menu. On affected devices, clicking or selecting the Start button, or using the Windows key on the keyboard may not work.

The company provided little information: The scope of the problem was unclear and what triggered it on a "small number of devices." It's possible this is incompatible with antivirus software, but that's speculation at the moment.

Users experiencing this issue may be facing certain workflow issues. Even powering off the system may be challenging for some people, depending on their experience with the operating system. The old Ctrl-Alt-Delete might be helpful here, and using the Run box opened with Windows-R might help launch programs and tools.

Microsoft uses known issue rollbacks to roll back issues. The rollback may take "up to 24 hours to propagate" to consumer and unmanaged devices. For most users, the issue should have been resolved at the time of writing.

Enterprise-managed devices require more attention:

For enterprise-managed devices that have installed the affected updates and are experiencing this issue, it can be resolved by installing and configuring special group policies This problem. The special group policy can be found in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> KB5014668 220721_04201 Known Issue Rollback -> Windows 11 (original version).

The optional update will be part of the August 11, 2022 Patch Tuesday.
